The term smart home is on everyone's lips, many speak of it, but EVERYONE interprets something different with it. Here are some examples of what statements I have heard in recent years:
"With Amazon Alexa I can control the entire house, e.g. 'Alexa, turn on the light in the living room'"
"For me, a smart home means controlling the light via an app and setting my favorite color."
"When I am out and about, I can access my home to view cameras or turn the heating back on in good time, as my winter holiday in the mountains is coming to an end."
"For me, smart living means distributing intelligent sockets in the apartment, which can be switched on and off via the app."
My definition of a smart home:
The smart home is the perfect interplay of the entire building technology to make life in your own four walls more comfortable, safer and easier for the resident. Most of the above statements are neither comfortable, safer or easier to use. A smart home should be planned: what requirements do the residents have? How will you live in 10 or 20 years? If the correct approach is missing at the beginning, your own four walls become an eternal construction site.
I am convinced that EVERYONE wants a smart home, but they don't know! Why? Because I understand a smart home to be something completely different from other people.
For me, a smart home is not a product that you simply order quickly from Amazon and set up over the weekend. Or a colored LED strip including a remote control that I can buy at the nearest hardware store.
A smart home has to support me in my daily life, relieve me of tasks, ensure security and NEVER have a disruptive effect. If the smart home is perfectly adjusted to its residents, every 5 star hotel is cursed, guaranteed! The conductor in an orchestra is like the smart home center in an intelligent house. It turns the individual components into a large whole that is harmoniously coordinated with one another.
Here are some examples of how such an interaction could look in practice:
In hot summer afternoon, the sun hits the glass surfaces in the living room from the west. If nobody is home, the heating “speaks” to the external venetian blinds in the west: Please close! If the sun is out of view, please bring it back up.
The presence detector no longer registers any presence in the room and “speaks” to the music control: I'll switch you off, someone here has probably forgotten. Then he speaks to the heating control: I switch you to absence mode, can save valuable energy. Then he “speaks” to the light: I'll turn you off, there is nobody in the room anyway.
It is cooking, the oven is running at 200 ° C, the washing machine is currently heating, some hotplates are switched on and the power limit has already been reached, the power failure is imminent. The energy measurement of the house now “speaks” to the music control: Please turn off the music for a moment and inform the residents via a spoken message that they are currently using a lot of energy and that they are asked to switch off consumers in the house.
Such an interplay of building services can only work if all information flows together in a central device. To a kind of command center, where intelligent decisions are made. The following can be integrated into a smart home: air conditioning (heating, cooling, ventilation), shading, light, security, music, multimedia, access, door control, photovoltaics, weather station, sauna, pool, garden and much, much more.
To answer the question “Who needs a smart home?” I answer the question with a counter-question: who doesn't need electric shading? No heating system? No light? No energy supplier and no multimedia devices? Everyone! So everyone needs a smart home.
